Perris has been selected by the National League of Cities to participate in its Community Health & Wellbeing Accelerator, a nationwide effort that will identify and reduce health disparities at the local level.
Five other cities — Lawrence, Ind., Commerce City, Colo., Miramar, Fla., Providence, R.I., and Las Vegas, Nev. – are slated to participate in the 12-month program, according to a statement on Perris’ website.
“The zip code you’re born in shouldn’t impact how long you live,” said Dr. Tonja Rucker, interim senior executive director for the league’s Center for Leadership, Education, Advancement & Development, in the statement. “We excited to see Perris seize this opportunity to improve the wellbeing of its residents.”
Perris (pop. 83,032) and the other participating cities will look for ways to build health and wellness into government policies.
“Improving health starts with understanding our residents’ challenges and working together to remove barriers,” said Mayor Michael M. Vargas in a statement on Perris’ website. “Our goal is to ensure every resident has the chance to live a healthy life no matter their circumstances.”
