Player-Coach Approach for The Strykers Going Forward

Rober Palmer (Berto), a longtime standout defensive player in the Major Arena Soccer League (MASL soccer) and former team captain, will be playing dual roles going forward as both player and head coach. The player-coach at one time was not that unusual; the NFL, NBA, and Major League Baseball all have history with the player-coach.  Baseball was home to the most player-managers, with over 200 instances throughout MLB history. Hall of Fame legends like Ty Cobb, Frank Robinson, and Lou Boudreau all managed while playing. The indomitable Charlie Hustle, Pete Rose, was the last to do it from 1984 to 1986.

Palmer was thrust into the player-coach role near the end of last season and provided a spark that led to a string of victories that put the Strykers into the playoffs and a reason for people to get Empire Strykers tickets and now buy Empire Strykers season tickets for 2027-2028.   (You can find Empire Strykers tickets and Empire Strykers fan gear at https://www.theempirestrykers.com/)

“Berto represents so much of what we want the Empire Strykers to be,” said Managing Partner Jeff Burum. “He is a proven leader, a fierce competitor, and someone who understands the standard this club expects on and off the field. We saw the response from the group when he stepped into the role, and we believe he is the right person to continue building this team for the future to help build the indoor soccer Inland Empire fan-base.”

Palmer has had coaching experience in other venues, such as youth and NCAA levels, as well as arena soccer.  As a MASL Defender of the Year and one of the league’s most respected players, Palmer brings championship experience, tactical understanding, and a deep connection to the Strykers locker room. His transition from player and captain to Head Coach marks an important new chapter for both Palmer and the organization. Palmer will also be evaluating and assembling his coaching staff, including identifying assistant coaches for the upcoming season to help with his role as a player-coach for at least the upcoming 2026-27 season.

“This club means a lot to me,” said Palmer. “I’m grateful for the trust the organization has placed in me, and I’m excited for the opportunity to lead this group. We have a talented team, a passionate fan base, and a region behind us that deserves a winning product. My focus is on building the right culture, holding our standards high, and pushing this club toward the success we all expect.”
