RivCo looks to regulate ranchos

Riverside County is considering creating a land-use category in the Coachella Valley for ranchos.

Supervisor V. Manuel Perez has directed the county’s planning department to work on an ordinance that would establish such a designation, according to a statement on the count’s website.

Ranchos are large agricultural properties – date palm ranches – that include a residence. Many are located in rural, unincorporated areas in Riverside County, particularly in the fourth supervisorial district.

Perez represents the fourth district, most of which is in the Coachella Valley.

Ranchos are often used for birthday parties, quinceañeras, weddings, baptisms, and other celebrations. They contribute to the local economy, as they employ food caterers, table and chair rental businesses, dressmakers, beauty services, and other small businesses, according to the website.

The ordinance will define ranchos, where they can locate, and what kind of commercial activities they may host.

The goal is “a county ordinance that recognizes and defines these types of agricultural properties … in the fourth district, that are rural in nature, and have been important for Latino families for generations,” Perez said in the statement.

  1. I live in district 4. I have what I believe to be an illegally ran Ranchos near my home. Throughout the year on Sundays mostly large extremely long, loud parties last much, much past the noise ordinance allowance. Several people have complained over the years to RSO yet this still continues into the night. Regulations and regular checks into these things would be greatly appreciated. They may be doing everything above board for all I know but, Monday mornings are hard enough with sleep.
