Riverside gets funding for transportation projects

Riverside has received $38.5 million in state and federal funding that it will use to pay for several transportation projects.

On July 6, the California State Transportation Agency announced that Riverside will receive $22 million from the Port and Freight Infrastructure Program to complete the Third Street/BNSF Railroad Grade Separation project, according to a statement on the city’s website.

Before that, Riverside was awarded $15 million in U.S. Rail Crossing Elimination funds for the $74 million undertaking in the northwest part of downtown.

That project, which has received money from other sources, is now fully funded. It will eliminate traffic delays and increase safety for trains, motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists, according to the statement.

“We are working hard to bring state and federal resources home to Riverside,” Mayor Patricia Lock Dawson said in the statement. “These projects will enhance downtown while increasing safety at Third Street and on the west end.”

Shortly before the $22 million state grant was announced, the California Transportation Commission told the city it will receive $16.5 million that will help pay for several other projects, including improvements to the Civil Rights Walk downtown and safety upgrades in the La Sierra neighborhoods, according to the statement.
