Riverside and a local developer have agreed to begin working on a proposed city-owned sports and entertainment complex.
The city council voted unanimously Aug. 19 to negotiate an agreement with GCS Development in Riverside to build the Riverside Sports Complex & Entertainment District in the Northside neighborhood, according to a statement on the city’s website.
The 56-acre site, former home of the Ab Brown Sports Complex, will include a multi-use stadium, six soccer fields, and an indoor sports and game complex in its first phase. Future phases will feature housing, retail and community spaces, walking and jogging trails, bike paths, playgrounds, and a dog park.
“This project provides recreational opportunities that Riverside and our greater region have never had,” Mayor Patricia Lock Dawson said in the statement. “It will create a destination that will energize our local economy and make Riverside a hub for sports and entertainment.”
Cost of the project, and a construction timeline, have not been released.
The proposed sports complex is separate from the Riverside Adventure Center, a similar project approved by the council in February that is being reviewed, according to the statement.
