Riverside will not honor Cesar Chavez, the late labor leader and civil rights activist now being accused of sexual abuse during his time as head of the United Farm Workers.
The city council was to have voted March 24 on a proclamation recognizing March 31, 2026, as Cesar Chavez Day, but that item has been removed from the agenda, according to a statement on the city’s website.
Instead, Riverside this will celebrate United Farm Workers Day on March 30. United Farm Workers Day is traditionally observed on the last day in March.
“We are aware of actions taking place both locally and nationally and determining what appropriate steps will be taken here,” Mayor Patricia Lock Dawson said in the statement.
Riverside has two public monuments honoring Chavez: a statue on Main Street near the pedestrian mall and the Cesar Chavez Community Center at 2060 University Ave.
The city-owned community center is being refurbished.
