San Bernardino will help build a 30-unit, affordable housing project in the city’s downtown to house veterans.
The project at 1351 N. E St., will be built by U.S. Vets in partnership with San Bernardino and Kingdom Development, Inc. in Riverside, according to a statement released by the city.
At its Nov. 5 meeting, the San Bernardino City Council unanimously approved $4 million for the three-story development. It will provide permanent housing for at-risk and recently homeless veterans.
U.S. Vets is a nonprofit in Los Angeles that is working to end homelessness among veterans. In January, San Bernardino County’s Point-In Time Count found that about six percent of the county’s unsheltered homeless population – people living on the street – are veterans.
“Housing our veterans and their families in San Bernardino is a responsibility we take very seriously,” said Mayor Helen Tran in the statement. “This is why this project is so important.”
The development is expected to be complete by the end of 2027. It will have one- and two-bedroom units that will be available to veterans earning 30 to 50 percent of the area’s median income, according to the statement.
