Temecula could add houses, condominiums

A commercial strip in Temecula might be turned into a residential thoroughfare.

The 560-acre Jefferson Avenue Corridor, now populated mostly with strip malls and office parks, could be rezoned so that more than 3,700 new apartments and condominiums would be built there, according to a report in The Press-Enterprise.

The Uptown Jefferson Specific Plan would also allow for more than 300 new hotel rooms and approximately 1.7 million square feet of commercial space, the report stated.

Temecula officials have for years considered changing the corridor into a residential area. Last month, the city put a hold on any development along the corridor that doesn’t conform with the design standards in the plan.

The plan is available on Temecula’s website, at city hall or in any of the city’s libraries. All written comments on the plan must be submitted by Monday.

A final report on possible zoning changes to the Jefferson Avenue Corridor are expected to be finished by the end of this year, after which the planning commission and city council will consider the matter, the report stated.
