Tune in to The Main Event this Saturday Morning at 9:30 on AM590

Tune in to The Main Event this Saturday morning at 9:30 on AM590 with host Ed Hoffman as he discusses national current events and politics, with a few mortgage tips along the way. Ed delivers intelligent, entertaining radio that makes hard news easy to understand!

This week, Scott McAfee takes the wheel while Ed lets his voice heal but Ed is still behind the mic to chime in and engage. It all starts with a recap of the omnibus spending bill, which passed the House on Friday and was expected to clear the Senate by the end of the day. The bill provides continued funding for Planned Parenthood, Obamacare, the EPA and the government’s refugee resettlement program – all initiatives that a Republican-led Congress would not be expected to support.

In response to the criticism from conservatives who are upset by the passage of the bill, Speaker Paul Ryan said, “We won some, we lost some.” Ed’s reaction: “I thought the reason for getting control of both Houses was that we didn’t have to lose any.” Of the fact that this $1.1 trillion bill went through on the last day before the holiday recess (which is no accident), Ed says, “I thought Paul Ryan was going to put a stop to this kind of thing.” Ed and Scott discuss the disappointing details; if you need to be filled in, tune in to The Main Event this week.

Next it’s on to the final Republican debate of 2015, and the first debate since the terrorist attack here in San Bernardino. Ed and Scott joke about the “San Bernardino drinking game,” since the candidates mentioned the city dozens of times and pandered to conservative voters by invoking the terror attack. There’s also audio of the candidates addressing terror, as most of them agree it’s the number one issue America faces. The consensus is that Rubio and Fiorina had the best things to say on terror: “Every time Carly Fiorina opens her mouth, it tells me she’s the most in touch with what we need in this country – even if the polls don’t reflect that,” Ed says. Fiorina was only given 9:32 minutes to speak, so she spoke less than all but one other candidate (John Kasich). If you think this is a travesty, listen to this week’s The Main Event.

You’ll also hear about the side debates of the night, including the argument between Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz on the USA Freedom Act. Cruz supported the bill on its way to passage back in June, maintaining that it enhanced what the Patriot Act was doing – but Rubio believes that the removal of accessing metadata was detrimental to our ability to locate terrorists. When Wolf Blitzer asked Ben Carson his opinion, Carson’s answer was a weak, “I don’t know…let them fight.” Ed’s reaction: “I don’t think how smart he can get him past the strength issue. He doesn’t hold the strength and personality that’s going to move this country.” Fiorina, on the other hand, knew her stuff on the metadata question; tune in to The Main Event to hear her answer.

On this week’s show, you’ll also hear:

  • Thoughts on Rubio ducking the path to citizenship question
  • Why Trump might not be so sure he’s the nominee
  • What Chris Christie line Ed calls a “diss” on the Inland Empire
