Tune in to The Main Event this Saturday morning at 9:30 on AM590 with host Ed Hoffman as he discusses national current events and politics, with a few mortgage tips along the way. Ed delivers intelligent, entertaining radio that makes hard news easy to understand!
This week, Ed leads things off with a discussion on the New York primary and some serious election analysis. Trump easily won New York, but in terms of how close he got to the total 95 delegates, the specifics are still being nailed down. “I’m not really sure how the final numbers come out,” Ed says. “I’ve been hearing his delegates range somewhere between 89 and 92, depending on what news you’re reading.” As of Friday morning, the Associated Press was reporting 89. He also sounds off on those who “wasted their votes” on John Kasich, who came in second with four delegates and 25% of the vote. “Trump doesn’t have a nickname for Kasich,” Ed says, “because he’s a nobody.” As you may know, Ted Cruz – the candidate known for criticizing “New York values” – won a total of zero delegates in the state.
This week, Trump took a quick break from calling Cruz “Lyin’ Ted” to the delight of many in conservative media – and yet, he went back to using the nickname by Wednesday and accused him of “holding the Bible” while he lies. Ed plays audio of several people discussing it; if you have feelings about whether Trump’s behavior is presidential, tune in to this week’s show to hear both sides of the debate.
One of Ed’s views relates to the dramatic changes in the election landscape thanks to the evolution of media coverage. For example, he says: Prior to the explosion of 24-hour digital media, it was possible for candidates to delay campaigning in specific states without it affecting their viability. Then, Ed says, “People had exposure in 2008 that they had never experienced.” He points to Rudy Giuliani, who opted to skip the first three weeks of primaries to campaign more in Florida in that election thereby tanking his campaign. “What worked for Bill Clinton in 1992 didn’t work for Rudy Giuliani in 2008,” Ed concludes, referencing that Clinton was able to do that 16 years earlier and still won his party’s nomination. His point: People are expecting certain things out of Trump that they didn’t necessarily expect in elections past.
As the first half winds down, Ed talks about pros and cons of both Trump and Cruz and concludes, “I want a guy who will make the right decisions and talk to the right people when it comes to being President. That’s why I’m comfortable with Trump.”
