Target to take over part of former Kmart building

Target will occupy 70,000 square feet of space in Ontario formerly used by Kmart.

The retail chain has leased space in the Vineyard Freeway Center, 1670 E. Fourth St., according to Progressive Real Estate Partners in Rancho Cucamonga.

Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Progressive marketed the property next to Interstate 10 and represented the lessor in the lease negotiations. CBRE’s Newport Beach office represented Target.

The building, which Kmart vacated in 2018, covers 94,000 square feet. Planet Fitness began occupying the remaining 24,000 square feet earlier this year.

Construction on the Target space is underway. Target expects to move in during the third quarter of next year.

“We are excited to welcome Target to the center,” said Paul Galmarini, senior vice president with Progressive, in the statement. “Between the re-tenanting of the former Kmart and the remodel, the center has been transformed into a modern day shopping destination.”

Vineyard Freeway Center covers 151,000 square feet. Golden Corral is located there and The Habit is expected to open there soon. More than 384,000 residents with an average household income of more than $93,000 live within a five-mile radius of the shopping center, according to the statement.
