The San Bernardino County Transportation Commission has approved a pilot program meant to reduce the illegal use of Interstate 10 express lanes.
The four-month Automatic Occupancy Detection program uses advanced cameras and artificial intelligence to count the number of people in a vehicle as it passes through a toll point, according to a statement on the commission’s website.
The technology produces verifiable result without requiring anything of the driver.
Recent studies have shown that more than 40 percent of drivers who were using high-occupancy vehicle lanes were not eligible to do so, according to the statement.
Total cost of the pilot program is not to top $150,000. If the authority’s board of directors decides to make the program permanent, new equipment would have to be purchased, and toll operations and policies updated, according to the statement.
