Perris considers a warehouse tax

Perris voters will decide whether the city should tax warehouses.

The Perris Distribution Facilities, Industrial Business and Truck Yards Tax Measure would place a yearly business license tax of 10 cents per square foot on commercial warehouses, according to a statement on the city’s website.

If passed, the measure would generate about $2.5 million to Perris’ general fund. It would be used to pay for public safety, fire response, parks and recreation, and infrastructure. It would also help repair damage caused by industrial development.

“Our city has seen substantial industrial business growth, and it is vital that our local infrastructure keeps pace,” said Mayor Michael M. Vargas in the statement. “By placing this measure on the ballot, we are giving Perris voters the opportunity to decide how we fund essential community priorities—such as repairing damaged streets, enhancing public safety, and maintaining city parks—without the burden landing solely on our residents.”

The proposal will appear on the Nov. 3 ballot.
