SB County to sell landfill gas

San Bernardino County will sell landfill gas taken from two future landfill sites to a local private company, where it will be converted for public use.

The county public works department’s agreement with Bio-Fuels San Bernardino Biogas LLC calls for gas from the Mid-Valley Sanitary Landfill to be turned into renewable natural gas, according to a statement on the county’s website.

The renewable natural gas will be sold and delivered to the SoCal Gas pipeline.

Gas removed from the Colton Sanitary Landfill will be used to generate electricity that will power a hydrogen generation plant. That facility will convert natural gas from a nearby gas pipeline into hydrogen fuel.

Mid-Valley Sanitary, an expansion of the Mid-Valley Landfill in Rialto, is expected to open in September. Colton Sanitary is still being planned, with construction likely to start in several years.

Bio-Fuels will pay at least $600,000 a year, and up to an estimated  $3 million per year, in lease and royalty payments, according to the statement.
